Pygmy Children of the Congo
Former militia teens working in our brick factory.

Throughout the last decade, Rwanda, Burundi, and Congo have experienced horrendous war and genocide. Millions lost their lives. Families were completely destroyed. Women and girls were raped and subjected to indescribable violence. Another problem is that of children enrolling in the militia or army. Thousands of children were either forced to enroll or were bought for a few pennies, believing they had found a solution to their misery. These children were used to commit all kinds of violence. Today, since peace is returning with democratic elections and the formation of national armies, many of these exploited children are demobilized and forced to return to civilian life.

Because they are known for the violence they were forced to perpetrate on individuals and towns, the children find themselves shunned by their own families and towns.  Nevertheless, they must live a civilian life. Reconciliation is needed so they can once again be accepted by hometowns or other places they find themselves. Retooling is profoundly necessary so the children can earn a living other than by using weapons. FAMA, in conjunction with other organizations, is training these young people in trades such as brick making, carpentry, welding and other trades.  In 2008-2009, the United Nations provided funds to allow FAMA to train, equip, and reintegrate 101 young men from the Democratic Republic of Congo back into civilian life.  Much more could be done if resources were available.

FAMA needs your contribution to help these young people become reintegrated productive members of society!
